Currently, it is possible to use the Snipping Tool application to select parts of the screen or capture specific application windows. It is also possible to create a full screen section or a non-rectangular freeform section. Commenting with a pencil or highlighter tool is easy within the app too. Screen Sketch is the modernized version of the Snipping Tool. Most of its functionality was originally introduced as part of Windows Ink Workspace, but has now become a standalone application that can be updated through the Microsoft Store.
When you use the Alt-Tab shortcut to switch between apps, you can now switch to Screen Sketch. Also, pressing WIN + Shift + S will open a Snipping Toolbar that can be used to take screenshots and automatically copy them to the clipboard. A notification will appear to confirm that a screenshot was taken.

The Snipping Tool allows you to take four different types of screenshots:
Once you have changed the settings to your requirements, you can click New or Ctrl + PrtnScr to take snapshots. This will only work when you set Snipping Tool as the default browser. Otherwise you can invoke using Win + Shift + S.
Let’s take a look at the ways to use Snipping Tool in Windows 11/10 effectively:
Find the Snipping Tool using the search icon on the taskbar and click the result. The tool will open and be immediately on your desktop.
By clicking Win + PrntScr in Windows, you will be able to capture the screenshot based on your settings. The image is automatically saved in your Pictures folder.
If you use it regularly, you can also create a desktop shortcut for the Snipping Tool for easy access.
If you are a frequent user of the Snipping Tool, you can create a hotkey for it. To do this, open the System32 folder and right-click SnippingTool.exe (or its shortcut in the Program / Accessories folder). Select Properties. Here, you can configure a hotkey for it. I have selected, for example, F5. So to open the Snipping Tool, all I have to do next time is press F5.
If you want to capture screenshots of your context menu, start the Snipping Tool and click Esc. Then right-click on the desktop, file, or folder, and then press Ctrl + PrntScr. This will allow you to capture the right click context menu. You can also capture the start menu using this trick.
The new Snipping Tool menu in Windows 11/10 now allows you to set a 10 second delay for capturing pop-up menus. Before it was available between 1 and 5 seconds, but not anymore.
In Windows 10 and Windows 11 now, you can capture a part of your screen using a keyboard shortcut: WinKey + Shift + S. You can even create a shortcut on the desktop using the command clipping tool / clip in the Location box.
When the Snipping Tool is open and active, a white overlay appears. If you want to turn it off, you can do so through your Options. Uncheck the option to Show screen overlay when Snipping Tool is active. To save the image, you need to click the Save Crop button. An added feature is that full screen captures are automatically saved to your Pictures folder.
If you want to share a snippet, you can click the arrow on the Send Snippet button and select an option (email) from the menu.
