Seattle detectives arrested a a 15-year-old boy Tuesday in connection with a series of armed shoe robberies dating to December.
The boy is believed to have arranged meetings with people selling high-end athletic shoes on Craigslist and robbed them with the threat of a firearm. One other involved person remains at large.
The first known robbery occurred Dec. 20, 2015. The boy answered an ad on Craigslist about selling high-end basketball shoes, police say. When the seller showed up at the meeting place in the 6700 block of 28th Avenue South near Holly Park, the teen drew a gun and grabbed the shoes and additional property from the seller before running off, reports indicate.
The second incident occurred Jan. 20, when another seller met the teen in the 7000 block of 32nd Avenue South to sell him a pair of $800 sneakers, police say. The boy grabbed the shoes and ran away. When the seller tried to chase him, the boy fired a shot into the air, prompting the seller to stop and call 911. Responding officers could not find the robber.
Another man tried to sell three pairs of Nike Jordan-brand basketball shoes and agreed to meet the same boy in the same location as the previous robbery. The seller and the teen chatted for about a minute before a second suspect arrived, carrying an Uzi-like gun, according to Seattle police. The two robbers grabbed all three pairs of sneakers and ran away, reports indicate.
Detectives arrested one of the suspects Wednesday afternoon at his school. During an interview, the 15-year-old confessed to “wheeling and dealing” with shoes.
A search warrant served at the boy’s home yielded several items connected to the robberies. Cops booked the teen into juvenile detention for investigation of robbery.
