Chicago is America's Best Restaurant City, Topping L.A., Says Conde Nast Traveler – Eater Chicago

And deep-dish pizza is still pizza, and it’s delicious
Chicago continues to shed its image of solely being a mecca for comfort foods as Conde Nast Traveler called this humble Midwestern burgh the “best restaurant city in America.” The declaration was from the magazine’s list of best restaurants in Chicago. Chicago’s chief competition appeared to be from Los Angeles.
“Sorry, Los Angeles, but this is the best restaurant city in America right now. You may think it’s all steakhouses and encased meats here, but there’s a reason the James Beard Foundation moved its awards show to Chicago in 2015….”
Don’t worry, the magazine still included Italian beef (Mr. Beef) and deep-dish pizza (Pequod’s Pizza) spots on its 19-restaurant list. There are plenty of reasons why the Beards moved to Chicago, it continues, although there are probably several incentive-related ones why the awards are staying at the Lyric Opera of Chicago until 2021.
The list included both the original iteration of Publican and the newer Wicker Park one, but no, the O’Hare International Airport location didn’t make it. Au Cheval’s burger made an obligatory appearance, as did Rick Bayless via his West Loop restaurant, Leña Brava. Chicagoist noted that Income Tax, the new wine bar turned full-service restaurant in Edgewater, also earned a spot. Alinea Group’s flagship restaurant in Lincoln Park and Roister in Fulton Market also earned recognition.
Should this be a sense of civic pride for Chicago’s food industry? How do frequent travelers feel? Share those opinions in the comments.
